The Trial

What is the Tour Testing Program?

Answer four questions about your swing and the ball flight you want. GEARS Fitting selects two shafts from our lineup that are the best fit for your game, and both arrive tipped and gripped for your driver.

You test them where you actually play, over 14 days, on your schedule. Keep your favorite or request a custom build. Send back what you're not keeping with the label in the box.

Why two shafts instead of one?

As good as GEARS Fitting is, there is still a human element in every aspect of golf equipment.

Sending you two similar shafts with slightly different torques and weights allows for tour-level tuning, which is what we're after. You'll know for sure which one gives you more of the shape you want.

How long do I have to test them?

You have 14 days from the day they arrive.

If you need more time, you can reach out to us about an extension.

Do I need a launch monitor?

It's not necessary, but if you have access, take advantage of it.

We created videos with protocols for Standard Testing (no launch monitor) and Advanced Testing (with launch monitor) that will help you test shafts like a tour player.

Can I keep both?

Yes. Most players keep one. But if they both earn a spot, keep them both.

A backup driver shaft is one of golf's luxuries that is worth it, especially if you travel to play. You pay for both.

What if I don't like either one?

Send them both back. You'll only pay shipping.

Then tell us what wasn't right. If we missed, we want to know why and how we can get better.

Fit

How do you know what I need from four questions?

We built our shaft lineup to correspond to what the GEARS data tells us golfers need, and the answer was clear: the correct amount of torque for the way they swing the club.

Torque is roughly 50% of a shaft's performance. Once we understand what you want your shots to do and your approximate swing speed, we can confidently deliver a two-shaft recommendation with the ideal amount of torque for the way you swing.

Will these fit my driver?

Yes. Tell us what driver head make and model you play and we install the correct adapter.

We cover every major driver head model from the last decade-plus from TaylorMade, Callaway, Titleist, Ping, Cobra, and Srixon. If you're playing a different driver brand, reach out to us and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

Can I ask for a different shaft than the one I was matched with?

We'll want to talk it through.

We've tested GEARS Fitting at every level of the game. If you feel you have important information about your game to share or you're concerned about a shaft recommendation, let's talk about it before you order.

Do you make shafts for fairway woods, hybrids, or irons?

Yes on fairway woods and irons, no on hybrids (with some caveats).

Our Tour Testing Program is currently only available for driver heads, but every GEARS wood shaft works in a driver or a fairway wood.

We also created GEARS iron shafts, filament wound, same as our driver shafts. If you go through our Tour Testing Program, your final decision will allow us to match you to the appropriate iron shaft for your game.

We do not make a hybrid-specific shaft at this time, but golfers have used our lighter-weight iron shafts as hybrid shafts.

I'm left-handed. Do the test shafts work in my driver?

Yes. Tour Testing Program shafts ship with right-handed adapters. The adapter is the same part for both righties and lefties, but the printed marks change.

Here are the three main rules for lefties using right-handed adapters.

Lie marks are accurate. Upright and flat do what they say.

Loft marks are backwards. A plus mark plays as a minus. A minus plays as a plus.

Standard is still standard for most brands. Callaway and Titleist are the exceptions.

If your own shaft already has a right-hand adapter, just match the setting.

What It Costs

What am I charged today?

$0. There won't be any charges until after your Tour Testing Program closes.

That happens when we check in your return.

What does it cost?

$325 for the shaft you keep, plus $29 for shipping.

That flat fee covers outbound and inbound shipping.

Why do you need my card if I'm not paying today?

Fair question. Two shafts ship to you. Your card is how you pay for the one you keep.

There are no charges until the end of the Tour Testing Program. Shopify, the e-commerce platform we use, saves the card. We never see the card information. When your return arrives and we check it in, we charge you for the shaft you kept plus flat shipping.

What if I send both back?

You pay $29 for round-trip shipping and nothing else.

We never charge you for a shaft you don't keep unless it comes back blatantly abused.

Is shipping refunded?

We don't refund shipping.

It's $29, and it covers freight in both directions.

I sent one shaft back and was charged for it anyway.

Email us, and we'll fix it.

Shipping & Returns

When will my shafts ship?

Your shafts ship within two business days of your order.

How do I send the other shaft back?

Keep the box your shafts arrived in. There's a prepaid label and tape inside.

When your trial closes, put the shaft or shafts you're not keeping back in that box, tape it shut with the tape provided, and put the prepaid label on the outside. That's it.

What if I miss the return window?

Get in touch. We'll work with you.

If you don't send them back, we treat that as keeping both. We'll remind you first. When in doubt, get in touch with us.

What if I damage a shaft during the trial?

Go play golf. That's what shafts are for.

We expect normal wear from real rounds. We don't charge for it. Blatant abuse is different.

What if it gets lost on the way back?

Once the carrier scans it, it's our problem.

Serial tracking means we know what shipped and what didn't arrive.

Do you ship outside the US?

Right now we only ship inside the U.S.

After You Choose

What happens once I choose my GEARS shaft?

You're free to keep the shaft you've been testing or ship both shafts back to us so we can build your preferred shaft to your custom specs.

If you have any questions about these custom specs — length, grip, and tipping — just reach out to us.

Can I customize it?

Yes. Length, grip, and tipping can all be customized.

How long does the build take?

Custom builds take up to three business days.

Can I buy a shaft without testing?

Yes. Every product page has a direct purchase option at $325.

We don't recommend it unless you've already tested the GEARS shaft you're ordering.

About GEARS

Who designs GEARS shafts?

We do. They're created with GEARS data.

Why not just buy a shaft off the rack?

Because you'd be guessing, and in the end you pay more for guessing.

Either in actual money or performance.

What do the numbers mean — 3155, 4066, 5547?

These four-digit numbers are the torque (degrees) and weight (grams) of our shafts.

We don't identify shafts by a "flex" (R, S, X, etc.) because those measurements are subjective. Torque and weight are actual measurements, and we always want to measure and not guess.
